Ok here's the horse chase scene from Last Train. This was a combo of practical horse chase with a stunt double and green screen of Malcolm on a mechanical horse.
I realized I only have an ungraded version, but in a way that's better because you can see how the pieces fit together in a more raw form. We def were able to smooth this out, aka make it more believable, in the grade.
Stay for the end -- the push in on the outlaws is one of my favorite shots of the film ;-).
Here's the train scene from Toad. Some of the early train shots are still temp, the ones with the digital twin of the car are close to final I'm pretty sure. And worth noting, this is just a (talented) dude working from his computer by himself somewhere in rural PA.
And lastly, just wanted to comment on the process conversation we just had. First off, I'm sorry you worked with a DP that made a point to be condescending to the director -- what a loser. That is emaphatically not the job. As I see it, my job is to figure out how the director likes to work and fill-in in the way that is best helpful. For lenses, I work with some directors who love to discuss the subtle difference the shot will have on a 32mm vs. a 40mm. On the other hand, I work with some directors who literally couldn't tell you a single focal length we shot a whole movie on because they don't care. Both are fine with me!
And for shot listing, same sentiment. Some directors bring me a complete shot list to implement, some want to collaborate, some directors I'm not sure know what a shot list is and we figure the scene out during the blocking rehearsal. All is fine with me.
It comes back to different modes -- sometimes my job is to implement a plan, sometimes it is to collaborate on a plan, and sometimes it is to come up with a plan in real-time while the entire crew is staring at you. The last one is a little hairy, but like I said, we always find a way to get it done. X
